Summer Paw Protection Starts from Within
Summer is one of the best times of the year to enjoy life outdoors with your dog: hikes, dock diving, agility, long walks, hunting training, camping trips, and afternoons at the park. But while we often think about hydration and heat safety, one area commonly overlooked is your dog’s foot pads. Your dog’s pads are their foundation. They absorb shock, protect joints and bones, provide traction, and act as a barrier against rough terrain and hot surfaces. During the summer months, these pads are exposed to intense stress from heat, pavement, sand, rough trails, and increased activity levels. Over time, this can lead to dryness, cracking, irritation, tenderness, or worn-down pads that make movement uncomfortable.
Common Summer Paw Challenges
- Hot pavement and asphalt
- Dry, cracked pads from heat exposure
- Rough terrain and abrasive surfaces
- Increased running and activity
- Burns from sand, concrete, or truck beds
- Irritation from lawn chemicals or environmental allergens
- Excessive licking or chewing of feet
While external paw balms and protection products can help, healthy foot pads begin internally with proper nutrition.
How Fido-Vite Supports Healthy Paw Pads
A dog’s skin, coat, and paw pads are constantly regenerating tissues that require quality nutrients to stay resilient and healthy. Fido-Vite helps support the body from the inside out by supplying foundational nutrients that assist skin integrity, circulation, tissue repair, and immune support. Foot pads are made of specialized skin tissue that depends on proper vitamin, mineral, amino acid, and fatty acid support. Fido-Vite provides highly bioavailable nutrients that help maintain durable, resilient pads capable of handling summer activity.
The Importance of Bio-Available Zinc
One of the most important foundational minerals for maintaining healthy foot pads is zinc. Zinc plays a critical role in skin repair, keratin production, tissue integrity, immune function, and overall skin resilience. Dogs with inadequate zinc intake or poor zinc absorption may be more prone to dry, rough, cracked, or irritated foot pads. Not all zinc sources are created equal. Fido-Vite utilizes highly bioavailable forms of zinc that are easier for the body to absorb and utilize efficiently. This helps support stronger skin structure and healthier, more durable foot pads capable of standing up to the demands of summer activity.
Our zinc supplier, Zinpro®, ran a research trial looking at the effect of Zinpro® ProPath® Zn on footpad health and locomotion. The results showed that the dogs fed Zinpro® ProPath® Zn had improved symmetry compared to the dogs that weren’t fed Zinpro® ProPath® Zn. Symmetry is important to prevent the wear and tear that occurs from unbalanced motion. Meaning, the dogs with increased symmetry used both sides more equally and did not favoring a leg. Zinpro tested dogs’ symmetry using a special weight sensing walking pad was used to show these subtle differences not visible to the naked eye.
