Lysine is an essential amino acid and it is the amino acid most often deficient in horse diets. Protein in a horses diet can not be absorbed in its whole form. It is broken down into amino acids. Lysine is an essential amino acid, meaning the horse’s body can not make it. It must be supplied in the diet. Many tissues in the body contain Lysine. Horses that do not received adequate levels of Lysine will display this with poor coat and hoof growth, poor growth in young animals and body tissue loss. We first became concerned with this important amino acid when we began to see top-line loss in metabolic horses that are fed all grass forages. Early this year we added Lysine to our Myo-Ease (Chromium Supplement) and we have seen excellent results.
