Caring for the senior dog to increase longevity, comfort and attitude.

We have discussed the importance of DHA omega 3 for improving cognitive function and brain development in puppies up to 1 year in the past, but DHA is also important for the senior dog, especially the dog with cognitive issues.

The product we would recommend for the very senior dog would be Fido-Vite SportzDog, as it has a much higher level of DHA omega 3 than Fido-Vite or Flexx.

Another product that can be used in conjunction with SportzDog is CoMega DHA. CoMega DHA is primarily a DHA supplement like salmon oil would be, but in a powder form. CoMega DHA and SportzDog also contain coconut oil. Coconut oil contains medium chain triglycerides that can be easily broken down into ketones, a food source for the brain.

The other benefit for the senior dog is being anti-inflammatory. Dog food ingredients generally run high in omega 6’s. Omega 6’s are pro-inflammatory, so the DHA counteracts the omega 6’s, giving pain relief to the dog with joint issues.

Generally, our normal recommendations for SportzDog and CoMega DHA will be effective for dogs with mild issues, but for more severe cases of cognitive decline and joint pain, we can do a customized recommendation around your dog food and other supplements you are feeding.
